Action Civique

£10.00

This image emerged during the Paris uprisings of May 1968, a period marked by profound societal and political upheaval in France. Produced by the Atelier Populaire, a collective of students and workers who occupied the École des Beaux-Arts, it exemplifies the spirit of resistance and creative defiance that characterised the protests. The Atelier was responsible for an array of prints that were quickly produced and distributed to amplify the revolutionary message, blending bold visual language with biting social critique.

Depicting a rat accompanied by the starkly rendered text “Action Civique – Vermine Fasciste,” this print confronts the viewer with an unambiguous statement against fascism. The imagery and language carry a confrontational tone, a reflection of the grassroots activism and civil disobedience that defined the period. Such works encapsulate the tension, dissatisfaction, and hope for change that fuelled one of modern France’s most pivotal moments.
