Soutenez Les Cheminots

£10.00

In the midst of the revolutionary fervour of May 1968 in Paris, Atelier Populaire, a collective of student and worker activists, created this striking image advocating for solidarity with railway workers on strike. The phrase “Soutenez Les Cheminots En Grève” (Support the Railway Workers on Strike) is paired with a bold depiction of railway elements, underscoring the collective struggles of labourers and their vital role in society. These posters, plastered on city walls, became a visual language of resistance, uniting workers and students in their demand for systemic change.

Atelier Populaire operated from the occupied École des Beaux-Arts, producing spontaneous images that have since come to symbolise the cultural and political upheavals of the protests. These works were seldom signed, as their focus was on collective political action rather than individual authorship. This particular image embodies the spirit of solidarity and active resistance that defined the anti-establishment movement of Mai ’68, capturing a pivotal moment of unity and defiance in France’s socio-political history.
